The To-Do Bar is extremely flexible; you can customize it to your needs.

Click View, click To-Do Bar, and then click Options. From here you can turn elements of the To-Do Bar on or off, and also select how many appointments you want to see.
This is useful on busy days with multiple appointments, because you can see them all at a glance.
